I Think Forest Gump Might Have Been Wrong?

Certainly not to pick on Forest Gump, after all he ran across the United States of America what, three times? But I’m not sure life is as much like a box of chocolates as it is riding a bike. Well certainly when riding a bike for some distance out in the wide open spaces and the winds are never truly your friend. I have found that regardless of the struggle riding into a wind, at the turn when I think finally a reprieve, there is always some sort of resistance.

And this is where the whole “life is like riding a bike” enters. Every time I am on the road this analogy drives each pump of my legs. As in life, there are no easy rides, and just when you think you have it all figured out, around the bend comes another unexpected gust. Well just like riding my bike into a head wind stronger than the one I thought I was already riding into, being so many miles from home all I can do is bare down and keep riding. Life is absolutely no different.

Now I will tell you it is O.K. to curse and be mad…for a bit. Believe me, the “wind gods” have been called every name in the book. However, once out of the system, I have no other choice other than to push on, just like in living day to day.

Eventually I find my way home, and eventually regardless of how many challenges have been faced, the sun sets on a day. This is where the satisfaction is found knowing that sticking with something to the end is always worth it, whether it be the final miles of a ride or the last hours of a day.

Robert Pirsig wrote in Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance, “The real cycle you’re working on is a cycle called ‘yourself.’ ’’ Whether you are out on a bike banging away some miles, hiking a pristine trail, walking the city streets, allowing your spirit to sail making music or writing a poem, allow for the challenges of the day to flash on by just as the beautiful scenery on a bike does whether going 28 mph or 15.

I want to put a plug in for a friend and her sister who are taking on a cool and fun venture this summer blogging about what truly are so many hidden treasures in Marion, Ohio. If you are looking for some fun and interesting insights please regularly check out marionish.wordpress.com. I know Kelsey and Cara would appreciate it!

To making it a GREAT day!

PEACE!
